DG Approved GP Rating Course

A GP Rating course is a 6-month pre-sea training program that prepares individuals for a career in the merchant navy by providing both theoretical and practical knowledge of deck and engine room operations. This General Purpose Rating course covers a wide range of skills, including seamanship, cargo handling, machinery maintenance, and safety procedures like firefighting and lifesaving appliance usage. It is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and is a pathway to entry-level jobs on merchant vessels, with successful completion requiring an examination conducted by the DG Shipping.

Course Duration

  • 06 Months (Compulsory Residential).
  • Starts every year  01st Jan and 01st July.

Age Limit

GN – 17.5 to 25 years on the date of commencement of the course.

Diploma/ Degree Holder – Maximum Age limit 27 Years

OBC – Maximum Age limit 28 years

SC/ST – Maximum Age limit 30 years

Minimum Academic Qualification

Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 10th Standard from a recognized Board with Science, Mathematics as subjects and with minimum 40% marks in English language either in 10th, 12th or diploma / degree exam.

Medical Standards

Medical – medically fit including eyesight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended.

Documents Required

  1. 10th Standard and Higher standard Mark-sheet.
  2. Passport.
  3. Medical fitness certificate
  4. All the above certificates should be brought in ORIGINAL with ATTESTED PHOTOCOPIES.

Saloon Rating Course was introduced on request from the Shipping Industry, in order to ensure enhanced & multiple utility of ratings, on board vessels belonging to shipping companies, worldwide. Accordingly, the erstwhile Deck Rating and Engine Rating courses were adapted to the new guidelines and concept of “Saloon Rating” was introduced by the Directorate. This ensured higher employ-ability of the Indian seafarers in world market.

Course Duration

  • 06 Months (Compulsory Residential).
  • Starts every year 01st Jan and 01st July.
